Matinecock and Lattingtown are private and peaceful communities nestled in a pristine area of Long Island’s North Shore. These affluent communities are a quintessential part of Long Island’s historic Gold Coast and feature large estates surrounded by vast areas of open space. Lattingtown is home to fewer than 2,000 residents, while Matinecock’s population is around 800 people. The hamlet of Locust Valley is the center of this community and brings residents of Matinecock and Lattingtown together. People are passionate about this special part of Long Island, and residents volunteer at the Locust Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Matinecock Neighborhood Association to maintain its beauty, cleanliness, and local neighborhood culture.

Matinecock and Lattingtown are within easy reach of Locust Valley, where Forest Avenue and the streets surrounding it features well-preserved 19th-century architecture and a variety of fine restaurants. The Basil Leaf Café Ristorante serves inventive Italian cuisine in a captivating space with two distinctive dining rooms separated by an airy outdoor patio. The menu offers outstanding Italian fare prepared with housemade pasta and other high-quality ingredients.
Piñons Pizza Company is a similarly exceptional destination for artisan pizza. Piñons also offers Vermont charcuterie platters and craft beers plus scrumptious desserts including a delicious Youngs Farm cherry pie.
The Brass Rail is a bustling American bistro pairing creative entrees and small plates with craft beer poured at a vintage 1880s bar. The 19th-century Gold Coast era of Long Island is evoked through beautifully appointed booths and equestrian-themed décor at Buckram Stables Café. The contemporary gastropub menu here includes sophisticated land and sea entrees with nightly specials alongside hearty market salads. Buckram Stables Café also offers a popular lunchtime soup and sandwich combination and an unbeatable choice of Sunday brunch plates.
Things to Do
Bailey Arboretum in Lattingtown is a beautiful, 42-acre green space originally established by financier Frank Bailey in the 1910s. The arboretum originally consisted of shrubs, trees, and ornamental plants imported by Bailey from France. This collection was expanded over the past century to incorporate more than 200 species of exotic trees, including the world’s largest dawn redwood. The gorgeous grounds of the Bailey Arboretum include two ponds, seven acres of landscaped gardens, 35 acres of woodland trails, and an 1820s farmhouse that was enlarged into a manor house by Bailey in the early 20th century.
Every August, the Locust Valley Sidewalk Sale brings residents together to shop at Locust Valley’s numerous boutique retailers offering steep discounts on their products. This popular annual event also includes live music performances.
Every holiday season, Santa Claus comes to visit and there is a beautiful tree-lighting ceremony to kick off this festive time of year.
